**Village Elementary, a CA Distinguished School; How CSF Funding Impacts our Elementary School Children

Village Elementary School’s recent award of California Distinguished School was based on an application that outlines two signature practices: balanced literacy and professional learning communities. A five-year school-wide plan for systematic professional development for implementation of K-5 balanced literacy instruction and an emphasis upon students’ ability to use higher order thinking skills, resulted in improved student achievement, especially in the area of reading comprehension. Additionally, a redesigned master schedule to include both weekly professional learning communities (PLCs) for staff and a block schedule providing for specialized instruction in content areas as well as enrichment in the arts and technology for students helps ensure enriching students’ experiences in those areas.  This schedule allows teachers to evaluate student performance, work collaboratively on best practices in instruction, set rigorous measurable goals, monitor student achievement, and tailor instruction for all students based on their needs. Village’s focus on balanced literacy and higher level thinking, the work in PLCs, and “specials” instruction are all responsible for remarkable and continuing student achievement.
