This year the Foundation begins it's 28th program year. In the early 1980's, the passage of Proposition 13 drastically reduced funding for public education in California. As a result, in 1982, a group of concerned parents and community members got together to form the Coronado Schools Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit corporation. Committed to children and to helping the Coronado Unified School District maintain its tradition of excellence, the Foundation remains today a critical source of funding for our schools.
CSF and its volunteers work hard to supplement our shrinking school budgets. Our two biggest fundraisers are the annual “Celebrate Children” Dinner Auction (held in the fall) and our Telethon/Membership Drive (held in the spring). CSF also has a Planned Giving Honor Society and is growing a healthy Endowment Fund at over $900,000 to further guarantee the successful future of Coronado public schools and their students. Once this fund, managed free of charge by Mark Andrews, Andrews Capital Management, reaches the $1M threshold, 2/3 of revenue generated will be returned to our schools for academic program support and 1/3 will be reinvested in the endowment. Designated gifts to this account are welcome and can be made in the form of cash, stocks or bonds. Please contact the Finance Chair at csf@csfkids.org for more information.
CSF funds equally benefit all five Coronado public schools: Silver Strand Elementary, Village Elementary, Coronado Middle School, Coronado High School, and Palm Academy. At the end of each fiscal year all net proceeds are divided on a per capita basis and disbursed in the form of Block Grants and other program support to the local school sites for spending. This year CSF is providing substantial funding ($108,000) for a part time Technology Resource Teacher at each campus and is paying for Advanced Band at Coronado High. In additon, Each site has a Block Grant committee that makes a formal proposal to the CSF Board of Directors for approval prior to spending. Since 1982, CSF has returned over $3.9 Million in additional funding to Coronado Schools.
